ANGLER ACCESS - SWAMPY PLAIN RIVER / KHANCOBAN PONDAGE

Picture A.McBurnie

Recreational Fish Species

Redfin , Atlantic Salmon, Brown & Rainbow Trout.

Location

Approximately 2 hours (155km) from Albury to Khancoban or 1hr 30 Minutes (105km) from Jindabyne.

General Access

Access to the lower reaches and Khancoban Pondage can be gained via the Alpine Way or from the Murray Valley Highway B400. Access to the upper section of the Swampy Plain River and Khancoban pondage boat ramp can be gained via Waterfall Farm Road and Power Station Road off of the Alpine Way. Further from the pondage the river is again accessed through the Kosciusko National Park via the Alpine Way or the Geehi Walls Fire Trail. There are several river crossings throughout the upper part of the river however all weather vehicle access to the river can be gained from Geehi Flat. Below the Pondage wall access is generally limited to shore based access directly below the pondage wall. Access across farmald requires landholder consent however most anglers fish this reach by canoe. Access to the upper most reaches requires a long walk from Snowy Flat . This is only recommended for experienced hikers.

Description

The Swampy Plain River (often incorrectly called the Swampy Plains River) is a medium sized river that flows from Lake Cootapatamba at its source ( no fish in this lake) through a rugged , scenic and pristine catchment. Throughout its length, the Swampy holds a sound population of Brown and Rainbow trout. The river is also stocked throughout under Fisheries NSW stocking programs in conjunction with local angling groups.  Khancoban Pondage is also stocked and access is also described in this section. The pondage has a population of redfin as well as trout and Atlantic salmon. There are no carp above the pondage wall.
The river itself is generally of a medium size and offers anglers many kilometres of bank based, canoe or wadeable water to fish.  The river is typically a series of clear , cool and long shallow runs that flow into deeper pools with pocket water a predominant feature of it its upper reaches.
Through Khancoban pondage the rivers flow is supplemented with water diverted through the Snowy Mountains scheme and the river can vary in flow rates below the pondage. The pondage offers year round fishing bank and boat based fishing. Below the pondage the river is generally larger and fishing can vary depending on the discharge rate from Khancoban pondage.

Setting

This medium sized river flows over freestone and gravel beds between bush lined banks in its most upper reaches. It graduates into flat willow lined farm land just above and below the Khancoban Pondage. The the river is generally very clear and remains fishable after moderate rain events.   Early in teh season its upper reaches can be almost unfishabe due to high snow melt flows.

Ease of fishing

A moderately easy river to fish in most sections there are some very deep areas in the lower and middle reaches . There are easily accessible and easily wadeable sections in the upper reaches in particular in the Geehi area. Rocks can become slippery in the warmer months. There are good numbers of trout especially later in the season and the fish tend to be in the 1lb range though many larger fish are present throughout the river. The river is known for it prolific hatches of Kosciusko duns and caddis .

Fishing Methods

Flyfishing:

Wet Flies: This river responds well to weighted nymphs such as size 12 Hare and
Coppers, Hares Ear, Flash Back Pheasant Tails, Green Drake or any dark nymph patterns fished in tandem under an indicator or as a Dry and Dropper combination (2 flies) . Often anglers need to use tungsten beadhead nymphs to gain depth in some of the deeper or faster flowing waters.
Dry flies: #10 -12Royal Wulff, #10 -12 Adams, Humpy and #10 hopper patterns through the summer months prove to very effective. The Geehi Beetle or Red Tag should not be overlooked in the warmer months.

Spinning/Lures:

Spinners: Small bladed spinners (Celta, Mepps or Jenson Insect) fished into the faster water or through the deeper pools.
Lure: Small Tassie Devils, Rapala Originals (3-5cm)  or Orgee Lil Rippas in a variety of colours.

Baitfishing:

Powerbait, scrub worms, insect lave such as mudeyes work well naturally drifted within this river.
